LETS LEARN WITH CORPUS!

 Hello friends,

Great news! Finally, I learned what is corpus and how to use it, kind of. Corpus is a great tool to see words, collocations, the context in which they are used, find videos about the word you searched, and all that good stuff. I was required to create materials for my future students using corpus, and making them use corpus! I worked with my friend Simay on this project and although we enjoyed the process of creating materials, using the actual corpus (in this case COCA) was a painful experience.

This corpus only allows you to search for 25 words per day, and we had to search for a lot of words. Thus, we had to wait for a day to pass so that we can have 25 more searches allowed. What's more, the design of the website looks like it belonged to cavemen. I got flashbacks of the first times I used the internet back in 2006. Also, the context button just did not want to work (although it worked in school while we were learning how to use corpus) regardless of how many times we tried. My COCA account is created with my university mail, which I thought was going to give me more search permission, but still, it did not matter. We encountered problems after problems and had to change our plans and create new materials for our students.

Even though all the hardships we encountered, we managed to use COCA and make our students use COCA via the materials and activities we created for them in Canva. You can have a look at our materials from here

Until next time, take care...
